Discriminant of Symplectic Involutions

We define an invariant of torsors under adjoint linear algebraic groups of type Cn—equivalently, central simple algebras of degree 2n with symplectic involution—for n divisible by 4 that takes values in H(k, μ2). The invariant is distinct from the few known examples of cohomological invariants of torsors under adjoint groups. We also prove that the invariant detects whether a central simple alg...

Cohomological Invariants for G - Galois Algebras and Self - Dual Normal Bases

We define degree two cohomological invariants for GGalois algebras over fields of characteristic not 2, and use them to give necessary conditions for the existence of a self–dual normal basis. In some cases (for instance, when the field has cohomological dimension ≤ 2) we show that these conditions are also sufficient.

The Discriminant of a Symplectic Involution

An invariant for symplectic involutions on central simple algebras of degree divisible by 4 over fields of characteristic different from 2 is defined on the basis of Rost’s cohomological invariant of degree 3 for torsors under symplectic groups. We relate this invariant to trace forms and show how its triviality yields a decomposability criterion for algebras with symplectic involution.

Power-Central Elements in Tensor Products of Symbol Algebras

Let A be a central simple algebra over a field F . Let k1, . . . , kr be cyclic extensions of F such that k1 ⊗F · · · ⊗F kr is a field. We investigate conditions under which A is a tensor product of symbol algebras where each ki is in a symbol F -algebra factor of the same degree as ki. As an application, we give an example of an indecomposable algebra of degree 8 and exponent 2 over a field of...

Pfister Involutions

The question of the existence of an analogue, in the framework of central simple algebras with involution, of the notion of Pfister form is raised. In particular, algebras with orthogonal involution which split as a tensor product of quaternion algebras with involution are studied. It is proven that, up to degree 16, over any extension over which the algebra splits, the involution is adjoint to...
